The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the College of Arts and Sciences seeks a Research Aide to join our team. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors. With 38 departments, 20+ world-class research centers, and more than 2,000 faculty and staff members, students have the unique opportunity to study with the best artists, scholars, and scientists in their field. The College values diversity and offers a supportive, open, and inclusive community.
The Research Aide will plan and conduct research focusing on the synthesis of Amadori products, chiefly fructose-asparagine, in large quantities. Fructose-asparagine is an Amadori compound that can be utilized as a carbon and nitrogen source by Salmonella. The Amadori compounds will be formed by non-enzymatic condensation of the carbonyl group of reducing sugars with the nucleophilic amino group of amino acids through the formation of a Schiff base that rearranges to a stable ketoamine. The aide will take the lead on maintaining lab safety and equipment. The aide will also co-author publications describing research findings for scientific journals and other duties as assigned.
