The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally.

The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

Vacancy Description

A position is available for a Higher Scientific Officer (HSO) in the patient-derived models (PDM) team within the Breast Cancer Now Research Centre (BCNRC). Part of the PDM team is the 3D facility, which provides expertise and supports experiment design for the Centre to provide patient-derived organoids (PDO) models for translational studies. 3D cell culture and high content imaging, in combination with an unbiased informatics-based analysis, allows for an ex vivo approach to acquire a multi-parametric quantitative description of an in vitro 3D tumour phenotype. The PDM team has also developed a large panel of in vivo patient-derived xenograft (PDX) experimental models of breast cancer, with the aim of identifying and characterising targets and associated biomarkers for breast cancer treatment.

We are seeking an individual to join the BCNRC 3D Facility, to utilise these PDO models with the aim of growing patient derived tumour tissue for translational studies and molecularly perturbing targets of interest in these models using techniques such as CRISPR and lentiviral vectors. As part of the team he/she will characterise complex 3D Patient-derived cultures and assist with developing and optimizing complex 3D cell culture experiments.

The post will be based in the ICR, Chelsea, although the appointed candidate will have close interaction with Professor Tutt’s laboratory at King’s College London (KCL). The successful candidate will work cross-site with KCL team members for one day per week for patient sample collection and model derivation. As part of the team, the HSO post works directly with the PDM Staff Scientist, Dr Rebecca Marlow, who is based at both Institutions, and with Dr Eleanor Knight, who is based at the ICR and manages the 3D facility.

Applicants should have a BSc in biological sciences or equivalent and previous experience in 3D cell culture and/or organoid cell culture, automated imaging and image analysis of 3D cultures, molecular perturbation methods such as CRISPR and shRNA delivered using lentiviral vectors. Knowledge of biochemical and/or immunohistochemical analysis technologies, molecular biology techniques and experience of processing large data sets would be beneficial. Knowledge of breast cancer models and tumour xenograft pre-clinical testing would be an advantage also to the successful candidate.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and demonstrate good interpersonal skills and collaborative working practices. Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential.

Appointment will be on a Fixed Term Contract till 31 July 2020 in the first instance, we are currently going through grant renewal process to apply for funding beyond 2020. The starting salary will be within the range from £33,285 to £41,437 per annum inclusive, based upon relevance of skills and experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Dr. Eleanor Knight (Eleanor.knight@icr.ac.uk).  Please do not send your application to Dr Knight, formal applications must be submitted online.

We consider all applications on merit and have a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of our staff.
