Searching for a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center/SSOM, Maywood, IL, USA to form a collaborative computational research center in conjunction with the Center for Eukaryotic Drug Discovery, as well as a diverse international research program. Research focus will emphasize computational chemistry techniques, such as Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD), for theoretical design and study of small molecular (organic) compounds, organometallic and inorganic compounds, protein ligand interactions, polymer design and characterization, and drug design. Must be interested in forming collaborations for a wide range of applications in computational science, ranging from medicinal chemistry to bioinformatics. Should be able to employ several computational techniques to understand, as well as predict molecular interactions, e.g. protein ligand-interactions and protein-protein interactions. The primary focus is to develop in-silico cheminformatics tools for high throughput screening of large libraries for identification of lead compounds using available compound libraries consisting of synthetic molecules, approved drugs, and natural products. Identification of lead compounds will utilize molecular docking and structure-based screening to identify potential targets and lead compounds, and discern mechanisms of action. Primary project support will be protein-protein and ligand-protein interactions, particularly with neglected diseases, such as malaria, leishmaniasis, Chagas, Toxoplasma and buruli ulcer. However, candidates will also work on collaborative research projects with faculty in other research areas, e.g. autophagy, pain and cancer.

Candidate should be a highly motivated researcher with previous experience working in computer-aided drug discovery (CADD), as well as developing novel computational methodologies. Candidates should also have the ability to extend their expertise to other related disciplines i.e. such as physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. Candidates should also have a knowledge of computational tools for numerical approaches, and super-computing, advanced hardware and software architectures, resource management, and of course modeling and simulation. A knowledge of various disciplines, such as organic (synthetic) chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics, theoretical and computational chemistry, and computational biology is a plus. Most be able to work with faculty and mentor students to help support collaborative research projects in the School of Medicine, as well as other departments at Health Sciences Division. Experience with faculty and student interactions, i.e. teaching experience and course development is a plus.

Candidate should be privy to other disciplines, e.g. bioengineering to communicate effectively with one another. Demonstrated ability to collaborate on projects internally and externally, with other departments or universities, e.g. joint appointments with other departments or universities, is a plus. A willingness to travel to foreign sites, as well as have demonstrated the ability to disseminate information on an international level, e.g. workshops, and conferences. Demonstrated commitment and success working in a diverse and multicultural community. Experience in leading an independent research program and in leveraging effective external collaborations.

Applicants should have excellent writing skills and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or expected to receive a Ph.D.) in computational science, or similar fields by the anticipated date of employment. 2-3 years of Postdoctoral experience and experience mentoring/training international researchers will be preferred.
