A Post-Doctoral Research Associate position is available from 1st September 2019 in the laboratory of Dr Martin Welch, Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge (UK). This 3-year position is funded by the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust as part of a larger Strategic Research Centre (SRC) administered from Cambridge. The SRC, entitled “Gas, food and lodging; understanding the physiological and metabolic requirements of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the cystic fibrosis airways” involves 5 other international teams, and seeks to understand why the opportunistic human pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, exhibits such an exquisite predilection for colonising the airways of people with CF.

The specific component of the SRC being addressed in Cambridge deals with the question of fatty acid metabolism by P. aeruginosa in the CF airways. Fatty acids are known to be a major source of carbon for P. aeruginosa during CF airway infection. In particular, we aim to understand better the biology of fatty acid oxidation through structural, biochemical and genetic analyses.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or will have recently submitted for a PhD in a relevant science. They should have a keen interest in protein chemistry, with prior experience in the cloning and expression of enzymes for biochemical characterisation, and a desire to apply these skills to an important clinical problem. Prior experience in structural (x-ray or cryo-EM) analyses and/or proteomics would be advantageous, although this is not essential as training will be provided.

About Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge

The Department of Biochemistry is a member of the School of the Biological Sciences and one of the largest departments in the University of Cambridge. The Department is especially strong in research with investigators of international standing in a wide range of disciplines including structural biology, molecular enzymology, cell signalling and control of gene expression, molecular microbiology, plant molecular biology and bioenergy, cancer and cardiovascular biology. We also have a strong cohort of independent research fellows with funding from the Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation, BBSRC and MRC. The Department houses multiple core facilities funded by Wellcome Trust, BBSRC and MRC to support modern biomolecular research, including 800MHz NMR, state-of-the-art X-ray crystallography, protein chemistry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics and advanced services for protein and nucleic acid sequencing. In collaboration with the Department of Genetics we have also established the Cambridge Systems Biology Centre, which hosts genomics, proteomics and associated bioinformatics. We also participate in the Wellcome Trust-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute , the Cambridge Cancer Centre and other major research initiatives.
