Under supervision, provide basic animal care and husbandry for laboratory animals at the Center for Health and the Environment (CHE). Ensure that daily operations of the unit are in compliance with federal, state and University guidelines.

Responsible for performing routine husbandry for laboratory animals including washing and disinfecting animal cages, water bottles, and related equipment; and disinfecting and setting-up animal rooms for new arrivals.

Provide daily animal care in compliance with federal, state, and University guidelines regarding animal facilities. observing animal appearance and behavior and reporting subtle differences to supervisor. Responsible for keeping accurate records of the number of animals housed on a daily basis and submitting these records to supervisor each month. Knowledge in the field of animal husbandry and health care requirements and practices, and applicable federal and state regulations and accreditation.

Skills to analyze and interpret federal, state, University, and campus policies and procedures in relation to the maintenance of animal facilities.

Knowledge of basic health parameters for common laboratory animal species and animal identification techniques to recognize signs of illness.

Knowledge of basic animal room and facility requirements to recognize when problems exist.

Skills in sanitation and disinfection practices for laboratory animal cages and related equipment.

Interpersonal and communication skills to work courteously and effectively with the public, Center, campus personnel; and to interact in a pleasant, helpful, effective and informative manner in person and on the telephone with a wide variety of people.

Skills to operate and maintain cage washing machinery.

Knowledge of day-to-day animal facility utilization to accommodate a variety of requests on short notice.

Organizational skills to prioritize workload, to maintain accurate animal records and inventories, and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of employee health and safety regulations.
