Position Overview

The Department of Development Data within Development and Alumni Engagement is currently seeking a Limited Term Data Engineering & Analytics Specialist for approximately 13 months. 

Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) exists for the mutual benefit of the University of Calgary and its stakeholders, and coordinates donations of gifts to the University. The incumbent is a senior leader within the Development Data team that supports all technical and data analysis needs of DAE and its stakeholders. Reporting to the Manager, Analytics & Reporting, the incumbent will work in a high volume, faced paced, and complex role that requires excellent business process, quality assurance, reporting, leadership, and customer service skills. Additionally, this role may support data science activities within the department as capacity allows. The incumbent requires highly developed analytical abilities to solve complex problems with high impact of error. The work is unstructured and based on priorities, requiring the individual to operate flexibly in a high pressure work environment.
 
The incumbent is a recognized expert in data analytics/reporting best practices. They require the technical aptitude and experience to support all operational functions and business processes used to manage fundraising and alumni data at the University. Additionally, they require excellent communication skills to convey the information to end users . Key responsibilities include developing and applying complex, multi-levelled methodologies to accurately extract University gift information, and building reports, dashboards, and other visualizations to effectively and understandably present this information to key stakeholders up to and including Executive Leadership. This role also provides direction to the Reporting Analyst function to ensure that projects remain on schedule, and demonstrate consistency in reporting and adherence to established standards of development and documentation. The incumbent will actively mentor more junior colleagues in analytics structures, design, methodology, and best practice.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Along with the Manager, Analytics & Reporting, work with DAE teams across campus to identify specific fundraising issues for review and analysis, and develop/create solutions. Generate practical knowledge from existing and new sources of DAE and external data
  • Act as a senior expert on analytics issues. Identify, prioritize, and execute applied analytics that deliver insights across fundraising goals such as contact acquisition, donation conversions, increasing value of gifts, donor interests, and segmenting potential donors
  • Be a vocal Champion and Advocate for better Information delivery across DAE. Look for opportunities to communicate and share across Institutional areas with an eye to advance not only DAE, but Institutional efforts in better Information Delivery and Data Management
  • Examine existing reports and strategies, and initiate new functionalities and business processes leading to more robust data and improved operations. Work directly with the Senior Programming/Database Analyst on the Systems team to ensure that our database/system infrastructure has sufficient capabilities to support our analytical and data science requirements
  • As the most senior traditional analytics and reporting resource, undertake significant overall responsibility in key architecture and Information delivery tasks, and be accountable for the accuracy and quality of reporting documents that they and the team produce
  • Grow analytics capacity, maturity and standards within the organization through training, workshops, and supporting skill development
  • As the bridge between Traditional Analytics and Data Science, the successful candidate must regularly contribute to these efforts with the knowledge and confidence to actively challenge the vision and defined roadmap to ensure we are constantly fine-tuning our direction in a cost effective and successful way
  • As a recognized expert in the Analytics and Advanced Analytics areas, the incumbent will apply their fluency in both the theory and practice of extracting, cleaning, and modelling data, and present it in meaningful ways to end users through dashboarding and storytelling
  • Develop complex analytical reports and visualizations to present the requested information back to stakeholders. The incumbent will work closely with users to design a delivery method that meets their needs, is clear, and easily understandable
  • Produce results that are distributed both internally and externally, such as to individual/groups of donors, as well as to Government (e.g., Treasury Board), and the larger University community. These reports are used ensure compliance with grants, and are the official source of dollars raised for the Energize Campaign. They also inform Development performance incentives and activities by University leadership. Thus, inaccuracies/inconsistencies/inefficiencies in the incumbent's work have significant potential to cause harm to the reputation and efforts of the University
  • Gather, integrate, filter, and segment large and unstructured data sets for the purposes of identifying, classifying, and refining constituent pools for fundraising activities. Identify overall trends and patterns in giving, volunteerism, event participation, etc. and search for explanations and underlying causes. Support the Fundraising Analytics Specialist in the implementation of machine learning, and be a key designer and contributor to the predictive models that guide the actions of our fundraisers
  • Develop and test Extraction, Transformation, Load (ETL) processes (either through direct table access or APIs) in support of DAE's data needs and its DeView data warehouse. Map source system to data warehouse fields, and ensure absolute accuracy of complex calculated fields
  • As a fully functioning practitioner, proactively identify any inaccuracies in coding within DAE's underlying databases and bring forth solutions. The incumbent must ensure that all stakeholders are appropriately consulted and ensure that related processes within and external to Development Data are not adversely impacted
  • Employ creativity and technical ingenuity to address changing requirements, and deal with unanticipated and unique situations. As a recognized analytical expert, the incumbent may present at conferences and contribute to University- and City-wide user groups
  • Work very closely with other stakeholders within DAE and elsewhere at the University (e.g., Senate Office, Student Awards). Use advanced critical thinking skills to determine the most accurate and efficient way to disseminate information. When data is required from other University systems (e.g., PeopleSoft), the incumbent must construct a plan for working with other areas to acquire their data, while ensuring data integrity, protection of privacy, and system compatibility
  • Proactively develop detailed testing plans and documentation to account for the situations noted above, as well as a wide variety of other scenarios, and work with specialists throughout DAE to determine the root cause of any issues and how they can be mitigated. The incumbent must obtain buy-in and agreement from diverse groups which may have competing priorities. As a fully functioning practitioner, much of this work will be undertaken independently, with guidance from the Manager, Analytics & Reporting when issues cannot be resolved or where wider implications are identified
  • Due to the nature of the work Development Data does, and the fact a key consumer of our Information Products are executive leaders at the University of Calgary, there is a high impact of errors. As such, the incumbent’s work has to be correct and dependable, as well as entirely defensible.  They shall employ quality assurance techniques, as well as utilize soft skills to explain variations when stakeholders identify inconsistencies and outliers, and question results

 Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education with minimum five to seven years of demonstrated competencies in fundraising analytics, data science, predictive modeling, and/or similar fields
  • In-depth knowledge of ETL and data management concepts, and experience developing and interpreting highly advanced SQL queries for relational databases. Must have the ability to convert complex multi-leveled business rules into SQL. Significant experience obtaining and restructuring data directly from source tables, as well as through APIs
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex and large datasets, glean actionable insights, and communicate these to business users, both orally and through tools such as Tableau and SSRS. Must be able to impart understanding of complicated ideas and statistics in a clear and simple manner to a wide variety of stakeholders, both technical and non-technical
  • Experience in data science, with practical application using advanced statistical tools, machine learning/AI, and data mining is an asset, as is proficiency in programming skills with scripting languages (e.g., Python, R etc.)
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in complex data structures such as Data Lakes and their place within the enterprise Information Factory
  • Advanced knowledge of BI and data warehousing design, concepts, and best practices with several end-to-end implementation projects successfully completed. Well versed in the Kimball Methodology
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are required, along with strong listening and interpretive abilities. The capacity to remain positive and confident under pressure, and interact in a highly professional manner and build good relationships with clients and team members is essential
  • Experience mentoring and training others to increase their own knowledge and abilities in analytics, and a willingness to share skills and techniques with peers and colleagues, and the larger data community through blogs, user groups, presenting at conferences, and other public forums
  • The ability to determine business requirements, assess feasibility, lead project teams, ensure that projects stay on schedule, and provide actionable products to end users that meet their needs
  • The ability to independently handle and prioritize multiple tasks is critical to this role. Must be able to assess deadlines and schedule work appropriately. This position requires a high degree of critical thinking and problem solving, and the ability to deal with major complex issues
