Position Description:

The Smith lab within the UConn Center on Aging seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow interested in the neurophysiology of urinary control.  The successful Fellow’s project(s) will focus on our primary R01-funded research target, the mediation of paracrine and neuroendocrine control over detrusor muscle activity as it impacts bladder volume sensory transduction and the aging bladder phenotype.  Other funded projects in the Smith lab include investigating the bladder phenotype in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease and the role of senescence in the aging bladder phenotype.  Technologies currently employed include standard molecular and cellular techniques, bladder strip pharmacomyography, and an advanced mouse cystometric model.  Single fiber nerve recording and an ex-vivo DRG recording model are planned developments.  Funded collaborations on these projects also involve electrophysiology/patch clamp/calcium imaging, single cell transcriptomics/advanced genomic technologies (via on-site Jackson Laboratory for Human Genomics), and offer additional training opportunities for the successful candidate. 


  1. MD and/or PhD degree(s) in areas of the biological sciences relevant to this research;
  2. existing research expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, and immunohistochemistry evidenced by publications;
  3. experience with or willingness to learn rodent tissue and animal techniques including those technologies current and planned in our laboratory;
  4. willingness and desire to work with students and engage in laboratory mentorship, primarily with Neuroscience PhD candidate graduate students;
  5. demonstrated intellectual discipline and scholastic productivity with highly favorable letters of support from non-industry funded scientists;
  6. a desire to write competitive scientific grants that could procure funding for the applicant during the postdoctoral fellowship and will allow the candidate to transition to independent positions as academic faculty or within industry within approximately 4-5 years of starting work;
  7. fluency in English and the interpersonal skills required to teach junior members of the laboratory. The successful applicant will be a US citizen, permanent resident, or hold a relevant US work visa; preference will be given to candidates already qualified to reside and work in the USA.

The appointment is subject to an annual renewal to ensure that there is mutual satisfaction. Salary and benefits package will be commensurate with University of Connecticut policies.
